Taking a Bite Out of Crime, and a Hamburger Too.

Our neighborhood Watch put on a great "block party" at our park this weekend. The two woman who headed it up did an excellent job. Hot dogs, hamburgers, and drinks were donated from local businesses and grocery stores. They talked a wedding DJ to show up with a PA system and music for free. There was a fire truck, a motorcycle cop and a bike cop who gave free bicycle helmets to the kids after teaching them a little bit about bike safety, and taught them how to properly put them on.

The police department had their computer system set up to take pictures of the kids and make ID cards for them in case they get lost. They also talked to us about crime in our area and how it can be prevented and should be reported. And to top it all off there was a cool martial arts demo, lots of neighbors to meet, and squirtguns for the kids.

We all had a great time, despite the heat. It is so easy for us to just know the people in the area that we go to church with or the kids have school or sports with. It is so sad that I have so many neighbors that I don't even know what they look like! This party was a great way to get people out of their houses so that we can get to know each other and have a better sense of community in our neighborhood. I highly recommend it.

That sounds like a great thing to do. I wish our area would put together something like that. It seems like there's a parade or picnic every time we turn around, but a safety event would be nice.

We live in a townhouse complex and nearly everyone here is in our ward, so meeting our neighbors is not an issue! And living in a smaller town means that a quick trip to the grocery store takes at least an hour because you have to catch up on all the latest news with at least 3 different friends or family members you see there!
